Artist Statement

I painted a Wood Thrush on natural wood using acrylic paints.  First I sketched the body of the bird then did research to determine that White Oak and Spicebush would be good choices for the background. I painted the background and lastly the Wood Thrush, adding lifelike detail.

I decided to paint a Wood Thrush because they are common at Kings Gap and my own back woods. I was able to listen to their songs and view the bird in person to give me inspiration for the painting. The most rewarding part of painting birds is that I get to share the beauty of nature with others.

About Sam

I am a seventeen year old artist with four years of experience. I paint birds using acrylic on natural wood and various upcycled items like terra cotta and metal. Being an amateur ornithologist drives my interest in the birds that I paint.
