Artist Statement

When arriving at the lovely plein air location chosen for the day, I walked the property and away from the nicely groomed grounds, there was a weedy creek whose banks were supporting a large, old tree whose roots appeared torn from the ground. There was something poignant about the branches reaching to the sky when they used to spread out from the trunk. The tree displayed a dignity that inspired me to paint it. I chose to paint on sanded paper and worked with mostly soft pastels to capture the shading and color values of the dying tree. It was a cloudy day and there weren’t many shadows to show but somehow that seemed to fit the mood I was aiming to achieve.
