In an effort to stay connected with our Member artists, we thought we would visit their studios and share a bit of their work in progress with you.

Today we feature Claire Beadon Carnell

I like to begin a painting with a sketch directly on the canvas, using thin paint to layout the design and establish values.  I often do the sketch in earth colors (such as burnt umber, burnt sienna, raw sienna or yellow ochre.  In this painting, I decided to use burnt umber with a bit of ultramarine blue.

In this photo, I start adding color in thin layers, gradually using more more paint as I progress.  I keep working all over the canvas, trying not to get in the weeds with details at this point.

The last part of the painting is refining and adjusting to bring everything together to create a cohesive work of art.
