Go with the Grain: THe Art of Woodworking
2024
Included an introductory workshop at the Carlisle Tool Library
Held in CALC’s Upper gallery as part of the annual Art for the Holidays, this material spotlight exhibit highlighted artists working in wood, along with community members who attended a free public workshop. Trees are the bones of living forests, and they are organisms who surround built environments. Most built environments, though, also contain many trees. The wood used to construct buildings, furniture, and other structures all comes from trees that have been felled, sawn, and dried to make useful materials. The use of wood as a material is rooted in utility, although wooden objects occupy a spectrum from simple tools to embellished ornamental objects. This exhibit explored objects made from wood by local artists, and a variety of wood species were represented – some from nearby wooded areas, and others from other places around the world.
