This class is designed to teach you the basics of glass blowing. You will choose from a bud vase, ornament or small glass that you will make and take home that day!
No prior glass working experience is required.
Classes will be held in in Michael's studio in Elizabethtown, PA".

There’s Gold in Those Petals

Bring a little warmth to the gray days of February by learning to naturally dye with dried Marigolds.  Each student will create a large cotton gauze scarf dyed golden.  You’ll learn about how to mordant cotton, prepare the dye and care for your naturally dyed textile. While our textiles are dyeing there will be another fiber based project to explore.

Mixed Media Swap Night

Don’t have time to take a class during the week? Try this 1 day workshop that covers most of the Oil Painting Experience class - for those new to Oil Painting or just a bit rusty. We will play with oil paint, its associated mediums and tools and learn about color mixing, glazing and texture while completing several paintings.
We will take an hour break for lunch. Bring your own or go to one of Carlisle’s many wonderful restaurants.

Carol Reed is an award winning artist and Pennsylvania native. She has a B.F.A. in Painting from Syracuse University. In addition she has completed coursework in chemistry, studied batik in Florence Italy, synthetic dying in D.C., indigo & natural dyes at Longwood Gardens and shibori techniques with Ana Lisa Hedstrom in San Fransisco. Her current work consists of a combination of a fine art composed of weaving, painting and drawing and practical applications like tie dye socks and indigo dyed shibori scarves. She enjoys teaching at CALC and her class is guaranteed to be messy. www.carolreed.org

Surface Decorating Techniques

Looking for some inspiration when it comes to glazing your pots?  Learn a variety of surface decoration and glazing techniques, including etching with (and without) underglazes, and batik resists with underglazes. A number of techniques for layering glazes and putting multiple glazes on one piece will also be shown, such as glaze inlay and overlay, and ‘burst’ glazing.  Painter’s tape and wax resist will be used to work with CALC’s palette of glazes.  While the majority of time will be spent in demonstration, please bring several pieces of bone dry and bisque (even test tiles) to try these techniques during breaks.

Fire it UP! RAKU!

Dive deeper into the various firing techniques of Raku. The workshop will have several demonstrations and multiple firings. Students will glaze pre-made bisqueware and experiment with glazes in the multiple firings. Unlike other processes in ceramics, the pieces are removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. Students will learn both the traditional and contemporary techniques that make this kind of firing so exciting! You’ll be able to take home your fired work the day of the workshop.

Succulent Mania!

Design your very ownsucculent garden! This is a two-part class with ceramic artist Maureen Joyce, and Nina Poe of Roots Flower Farm. First, you'll design and build your own succulent tray out of textured slabs. And in the second class, you'll learn how to assemble a beautiful succulent arrangement in your clay tray!

Floral and Vase Design

Learn from the pros! This is a two-part class taught in partnership with ceramic artist Maureen Joyce & Roots Flower Farm's Michelle Elston. Students will texture and design vases in the first class. The second class will focus on composing floral arrangements for their unique vase!

Open Paint Studio

CALC Refund Policy for Art Classes

Carlisle Arts Learning Center does not provide a cash refund for cancellation of art classes, unless the class is cancelled by CALC. If the student cancels with a notice of at least 30 days prior to the start of the class a gift certi cate will be issued for 100% of the class fee. If the student cancels with less than 30 days prior notice a gift certi cate will be issued for 90% of the class value.
