Scouting Merit Badge Workshops

 

A limited number of scholarships are available for income qualified participants in courses sponsored by the Carlisle Arts Learning Center. Scholarships equal 50% of the membership cost for a course. Scholarship students are responsible for the remaining 50% of the membership cost, plus any applicable materials fees. Please contact CALC at 249-6973 or drop by at the center, 19 N. Hanover Street for a Request for Scholarship Form. CALC needs one form per student per course. Thanks!

Ceramics


Do you have a question or a problem with throwing, hand-building or a studio tool? Your questions can easily be fielded by Tom Oakes on Tuesday evenings 6-7pm and then as time permits 7-9pm.

CLAY WORKSHOP

Materials: $25 ($15 for one 25 lb. bag of clay and $10 for glazes and firing)

This class is designed for students interested in learning as much as possible in a short amount of time. It will focus on the relationship between form and function, as well as basic through advanced studio practices. You may work on the potter's wheel, hand build or sculpt, and will be encouraged to participate in every step of the process from the production of workable clay to the firing of your finished pieces. Glazes will be covered if time permits.

Drawing and Painting

Learn the joy of drawing! Four sessions will cover such essentials as line, shape, shading and composition. Various drawing mediums will be available to try. Each student will receive ample personal attention. An 11x14 tablet, #4B pencil and rubber eraser are included in the materials fee.

CONTÉ CRAYON: Landscape

Conté crayon is a hard crayon used by artists made of clay and graphite often coloured a reddish brown. Conté is an expressive medium requiring freedom and intuitive control from the artist so as not to get bogged down in details. It demands good line and form through which addition and subtraction methods, blending techniques and the use of different papers will help the artist learn how to get the most out of this beautiful, tender and dramatic medium.

The first meeting will cover a wheel throwing demonstration and an introduction to a working studio (1.5 hour session). One project will be made. The second meeting will review kiln firing. Fired project will be glazed (1 hour session). Glazed projects are then fired again for the glazed finish (glass finish). You will be contacted by the instructor to pick up boxed projects—usually within a week from the second visit.

The first meeting will cover a wheel throwing demonstration and an introduction to a working studio (2.0 hour session). Two projects will be made that meet requirements for different processes. The second meeting will review what was discussed previously: ceramics, processes, kiln firing. Fired projects will be glazed (1.5 hour session). Glazed projects are then fired again for the glazed finish (glass finish). You will be contacted by the instructor to pick up boxed projects—usually within a week from the second visit.

Experience hands–on camera technology from equipment spanning the past 25, 35, 50, and 80 years. Students learn about the development of photographic media from days gone by to the modern era of the digital age. Understanding of the basic principals will tie the evolution of the photographic process together. Students are introduced to a working black & white photography studio and will develop a Black & White Photogram using the darkroom under studio red lights. Extra lights are specially used for comfort in this introductory class.(1.5 hour session)
