TRY-IT-OUT: Part One on the Wheel

A two-day open experience of Wheel Throwing with an introduction to Open Studio. Experience the joy of ceramics! A great start to any ceramic class and the perfect introduction to the CALC studio and the ceramic wheel. All skill levels are welcome.

NOTE: 2 student minimum/4 student maximum (so bring a friend and schedule early)


TRY-IT-OUT: Part Two Glazing Time

A one-day experience working with glaze. Any student welcome from Try-it-Out: Part One or Open Clay Studio participant.

NOTE: Bring your own low-fire bisque artwork or purchase a bisque bowl for $2 (mid-fire glaze classes offered upon request)

OCS PLATES and PLATTERS DEMONSTRATION & HANDS-ON WORKSHOP

Class cost: $9 (members $8) One Open Clay Studio fee

Free instruction during Open Clay Studio (Tuesdays 6pm-9pm). Experience how clay can be thrown vertically and horizontally through live demonstrations and a hands-on workshop.

NOTE: 2 student minimum/4 student maximum (so bring a friend and schedule early)


Special Programs in Ceramics is perfect for field trips, daycares, scout troups, home schoolers, etc). Class content and scheduling are coordinated directly with Tom Oakes, ceramics instructor. Please contact CALC for more information (717.249.6973).

ONE-DAY PROGRAM in CERAMICS
Studio Tour and Project
Tom Oakes
Ages: 5-10 or 10-18
(Please contact the center to create a program to meet your interests)
Class cost: $10.00 per student
(14 student minimum or the equivalent of $140 for this program)
Cost covers use of CALC, art instruction, studio tools, clay, and one kiln firing

Wheel throwing demonstration and an introduction to a working studio (1.5 hour session).

THE SMALL TWO-DAY PROGRAM:
A Ceramic Introduction

Ages: 5-10 or 10-18
Class cost: $15.00 per student
(14 student minimum or the equivalent of $210 for this program)
Cost covers use of CALC, art instruction, studio tools, clay, glaze, and two kiln firings

The first meeting will cover a wheel throwing demonstration and an introduction to a working studio (1.5 hour session). One project will be made. The second meeting will review kiln firing. Fired project will be glazed (1 hour session). Glazed projects are then fired again for the glazed finish (glass finish). You will be contacted by the instructor to pick up boxed projects - usually within a week from the second visit.

THE MEDIUM TWO-DAY PROGRAM:
A Ceramic Experience

Class cost: $20.00 per student
(12 student minimum or the equivalent of $240 for this program).
Cost covers the use of CALC (a non-profit art center), art instruction, instructional handouts, studio tools, clay, glaze, and two kiln firings

The first meeting will cover a wheel throwing demonstration and an introduction to a working studio (2.0 hour session). Two projects will be made that meet requirements for different processes. The second meeting will review what was discussed previously: ceramics, processes, kiln firing. Fired projects will be glazed (1.5 hour session). Glazed projects are then fired again for the glazed finish (glass finish). You will be contacted by the instructor to pick up boxed projects - usually within a week from the second visit.

 

ONE DAY PROGRAM in BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY:
Studio Tour and Project

Ages: 10-18
Class cost: $20.00 per student
(8 student minimum or equivalent of $160 for this program) NOTE: 12 student maximum
Cost covers the use of CALC, art instruction, studio tools, clay, and one kiln firing

Experience hands-on camera technology from equipment spanning the past 25, 35, 50, and 80 years. Students learn about the development of photographic media from days gone by to the modern era of the digital age. Understanding of the basic principals will tie the evolution of the photographic process together. Students are introduced to a working black & white photography studio and will develop a Black & White Photogram using the darkroom under studio red lights. Extra lights are specially used for comfort in this introductory class. (1.5 hour session)

*This class meets the Girl Scout merit badge in photography. Contact the instructor for more information.

 

NOTE: 1-2 non-participant/participant adults are required in the darkroom


CLAY WORKSHOP

6:30pm - 9:30pm
$150 (members $135) - for 5 consecutive Wednesdays
Materials: $25 ($15 for one 25 lb. bag of clay and $10 for glazes and firing)

This class is designed for students interested in learning as much as possible in a short amount of time. It will focus on the relationship between form and function, as well as basic through advanced studio practices. You may work on the potter’s wheel, hand build, or sculpt and will be encouraged to participate in every step of the process from the production of workable clay to the firing of your finished pieces. Glazes will be covered if time permits.
