Move beyond the basics of wheel throwing & refine your skills and expand your range of forms through individual projects. Class will cover advanced techniques in surface decoration & glazing.

Surface Series Workshops:

"Surface Decorating Techniques" &"Fire It Up! Raku!"

One day classes meant for all levels of experience. Led by
professional artists, these workshops focus on specific techniques in ceramics. Students will walk away with the skills necessary to apply these new techniques to their own studio practice.

Fire it UP! RAKU!

Dive deeper into the various firing techniques of Raku. The workshop will have several demonstrations and multiple firings. Students will glaze pre-made bisqueware and experiment with glazes in the multiple firings. Unlike other processes in ceramics, the pieces are removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. Students will learn both the traditional and contemporary techniques that make this kind of firing so exciting! You’ll be able to take home your fired work the day of the workshop.

*Materials fee includes a boxed lunch

Ceramic & Floral Design Workshops:

Succulent Mania!

Design your very ownsucculent garden! This is a two-part class with ceramic artist Maureen Joyce, and Nina Poe of Roots Flower Farm. First, you'll design and build your own succulent tray out of textured slabs. And in the second class, you'll learn how to assemble a beautiful succulent arrangement in your clay tray!

Set the Table

Workshop with Ceramic Artist, Maureen Joyce

All materials are supplied, no experience required.

Create 3 distinct pieces for your table, serving or place setting. (Students will select a glaze and Maureen will fire your piece and it will be ready for you to pick up in about a week after the class. All tools and materials are provided, no experience needed. Some tools used are sharp knives and adult supervision is needed for younger participants.

Maureen Joyce is the director of ArtsLive and a member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen living in Carlisle PA.  She attended Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh and currently studies at Harrisburg Area Community College. She teaches a variety of ceramic workshops at CALC to encourage participants to explore clay’s various possibilities.

Crash Course: Intro to Handbuilding

Get your hands muddy in our three-week introductory hand-building course.  Learn the basics of coiling, pinching, and slabs for both sculptural or functional work. The first two days of the course will be centered on making with the last day of the class learning how to glaze your projects.

Porcelain Pinch Pots

Cut-It-Out!

Workshop with Ceramic Artist, Maureen Joyce

Craft Beer & Clay

plus $20 materials fee per person

Classes start at 7 p.m.

A fun night out at CALC.

Class & materials fee includes all materials and instruction as well as beverages and snacks. All skill levels welcome- our experienced potter, Thom Bissey, will insure that you’ll create a successful piece.

Thom Bissey has been a professional potter since 1987, he was educated in high-fire ceramics but moved to alternative firing experimentation. His work has been shown nationally and internationally.

Independent Ceramics Studio:
Allows access to the studio outside of regularly scheduled class time.  ICS hours with volunteer moderation will be held every Thursday night (6:30-9) and Saturday (10-2) unless otherwise specified.  ICS users may use the studio anytime a class is not in session in the ceramics studio.  Call ahead to check studio availability (717-249-6973). 
ICS users are required to:

  1. Have taken at least two CALC ceramic classes in the past two years and have approval from the studio manager. - or
  2. Have previous experience and taken one ceramics class at CALC and have approval from the studio manager.
  3. Be a member of CALC
  4. Ages: 12 - Adult 
  • ICS users will be responsible for purchasing passes once approval has been granted.  They are also required to purchase clay and firings.  Glazes are provided and covered in the cost of the glaze-firing fee.
  • Equipment use is not guaranteed and instruction is not provided.  ICS is intended for those with experience only.
  • No refunds of any kind will be issued for ICS purchases regardless of the reason.
  • All new ICS members must schedule an orientation with the studio manager to ensure safe and clear understanding of CALC studio operations.
  • ICS Passes expire four months after the date of purchase.

CALC Refund Policy for Art Classes

Carlisle Arts Learning Center does not provide a cash refund for cancellation of art classes, unless the class is cancelled by CALC. If the student cancels with a notice of at least 30 days prior to the start of the class a gift certi cate will be issued for 100% of the class fee. If the student cancels with less than 30 days prior notice a gift certi cate will be issued for 90% of the class value.
