Wheel Throwing 101

This class covers the basics of wheel throwing, from wedging, centering, making, trimming, and glazing. Geared towards beginners and those wanting to refresh their skills, this class is open to all levels.

Emphasizing the fundamentals of wheel thrown pottery such as centering, pulling, shaping, trimming & glazing. Students will also explore essential craft theory as they improve. Class is open to all skill levels, however, it is suggested students should have recently taken a wheel class and/or throw regularly.

Handbuilding

Crash Course Wheel 101

Crash Course: Coil Pots

Surface Series Workshop: Lustre and Decals

Students will learn tips and tricks for applying gold lustre and ceramic decals to glaze fired work. Students should bring up to five pieces of already glazed work for lustre & decal application.

Surface Series Workshop: Pit Firing

Teacher: John Guarnera

2 Fridays: Oct. 19, 26 - Time: 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.
And Saturday*: Nov 3 - Time: 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Fee: $135 ($145 non-member) + $30 Materials fee*
*Includes lunch on Sat. at the Red Tomato Farm, weather dependent


Students will be guided through the multiple steps of surface decoration and ornamentation used by the instructor in his pit fired work. This workshop also includes a hands-on Pit Firing of the student work on Saturday, November 3 at Red Tomato Farm in Newville.

Class 1 - Students will bring bone dry pieces to apply terra sigilatia, burnish and prepare for bisque firing.
Class 2 - Bisqued work from 1st class will be decorated using various methods of masking, stenciling and the application of low fire glazes. Work will be fired again prior to the third class
Class 3 - Held at the Red Tomato Farm to utilize their pit to fire pieces after application of masking and super low fire glazes. Class will include loading the pit & firing it. Work will be cleaned of residual ash and a varnish applied.

CALC Refund Policy for Art Classes
Carlisle Arts Learning Center does not provide a cash refund for cancellation of art classes, unless the class is cancelled by CALC. In order to request a withdrawal from a class or workshop, students must contact CALC at least 5 days before the first class meeting. Students who request a withdrawal at least 5 days prior to the first meeting will receive a 90% tuition class credit. Students withdrawing fewer than 5 days from the first day of class are not eligible for a class credit.
Please note we are unable to provide make-up opportunities, prorate or provide refunds for missed classes due to personal scheduling conflicts.
